The Steven
Klass Library

One teacher’s encouragement. A lifelong love of reading. A new chapter for families in Sierra Leone.

Opened in 2024, MaCHO’s library brings books and learning resources to children and families in Yurika, Manak and surrounding villages.

The teacher behind the name

He helped her believe in what was possible.

Before she founded MaCHO, Kadija was a student with dreams for herself and for Sierra Leone. At Pimmit Hills High School in Virginia, her English teacher, Mr. Steven Klass, offered something she would carry with her: belief in her potential.

Years later, her gratitude found a home in the library that bears his name. Rooted in her lifelong love of books, it honors a teacher who helped her see what she could achieve.

“He is someone who has influenced my life greatly. He was the very first person who made me believe that I could achieve everything I dreamed of, for myself and for Sierra Leone. I am honored to dedicate this library to him.”

A place to read.
Room to imagine.

The Steven Klass Library opened with community support as the first of its kind in the region. For many families in Yurika, Manak and nearby villages, it offers their first opportunity to explore books and learning resources.

A book can help a child practice reading, discover an unfamiliar place or find a story that feels like their own. The library creates space for those discoveries, bringing learning closer to the communities MaCHO serves.

Its beginnings also reflect the generosity of young supporters. In 2022, Ren, Steven’s granddaughter, and her friends organized a book and art supply drive. Their school and neighborhood contributed more than 2,000 books, while Steven’s former teaching colleagues donated thousands of books and workbooks.

Why books matter to Kadija

“Reading got me through some very difficult situations. I lost myself in stories and transported to a happier place. It was truly magical.”

Dr. Kadija Conteh-Barrat

Reflecting on her childhood during Sierra Leone’s civil war, Kadija remembers books as a source of comfort. That experience helps shape her commitment to sharing the possibility of reading with others.

Help the next chapter unfold

Share the possibility of a good book.

Support MaCHO’s work to bring health, learning and opportunity closer to families in rural Sierra Leone. To contribute books, school or art supplies, contact the team first to confirm current needs and donation arrangements.

Financial gifts support MaCHO’s community work. If you would like to help the library or the shipping of donated books specifically, speak with the team about your gift.

A teacher’s belief helped Kadija imagine her future. This library helps pass that encouragement on.
