Primary and urgent care
Our clinicians assess common illnesses and health concerns, offer treatment when available, and help patients understand what to do next.

Rural northern Sierra Leone
MaCHO brings compassionate primary care, prevention, and a path to follow-up to families who face the greatest barriers to reaching a clinic.

Care that people can reach
For many families in rural northern Sierra Leone, getting medical care is not as simple as making an appointment. A sick child, a complicated pregnancy, persistent pain, or a chronic condition can bring difficult choices when travel is long, transportation is limited, and the cost of reaching care competes with everyday household needs.
MaCHO exists to make that distance smaller. We provide free, compassionate healthcare for families in Yurika Village and the surrounding rural communities, bringing practical care closer to where people live. Our team listens first, assesses what is needed, treats when we can, shares clear health information, and helps patients take the next step when a referral is necessary.
Free care is not only about removing a bill. It is about creating a dependable place to turn before a problem becomes more serious. It is about helping a parent seek advice earlier, helping an older adult keep up with regular care, and helping families feel seen and respected when they need support.
Reliable care also respects the time and responsibility families carry. A parent should not have to wait until a condition is severe before seeking help. A community health service becomes more valuable when people know it is there, understand what it can offer, and can return when a question, symptom, or treatment plan needs more attention.
What free care can include
Our clinicians assess common illnesses and health concerns, offer treatment when available, and help patients understand what to do next.
Blood pressure checks, health education, nutrition guidance, hygiene information, and early care-seeking help families address concerns before they grow.
Prenatal assessment, pediatric care, and timely referrals help mothers and children get the attention they need at critical moments.
When a patient needs specialist support, MaCHO helps coordinate the path to referral and follows up through the community whenever possible.

More than one visit
A single visit can bring relief, but many health needs do not end there. Hypertension, diabetes, pregnancy-related concerns, nutrition challenges, childhood illness, and recovery after an urgent episode may all need attention over time. That is why MaCHO’s approach connects treatment with education, follow-up, and referral.
When families know what signs to watch for, when to return, and where to seek more advanced care, they can make decisions with more confidence. Local health workers and community partners also help keep care grounded in daily realities, including distance, travel, caregiving, and the resources a family has available.
This continuity matters because it turns a medical encounter into a relationship of care. It gives patients a clearer path forward and gives MaCHO’s team a better understanding of what the community needs most.
Built with and for the community
MaCHO’s temporary clinic and outreach work serve families in Yurika Village and 84 surrounding villages. The work is guided by the people who know these communities best: local healthcare professionals, community health volunteers, families, and leaders who understand where the gaps are and what support will make the greatest difference.
That community connection shapes how MaCHO works. Care is not delivered as a one-time event. It is strengthened through listening, through patient education, through follow-up, and through partnerships that help connect people to the care they need.
Since MaCHO began its work, the organization has cared for thousands of patients, many receiving medical attention for the first time. Every visit is a reminder that healthcare should be within reach, regardless of where someone was born or how far they live from a major hospital.
Supporters help make that commitment practical. A gift can help keep essential materials available, strengthen the place where clinicians can work, and make it easier for MaCHO to respond to what patients and local partners identify as most urgent. That shared responsibility turns compassion into care people can actually use.
The next chapter of care
MaCHO has completed the structure for its Community Health Clinic in Yurika Village. It is an important milestone, but a building alone cannot diagnose an illness, keep medicines safe, or give a patient a place to rest. The next step is equipping the clinic for everyday care.
Patient beds, examination tables, diagnostic tools, basic laboratory equipment, solar power, refrigeration, medicines, infection-prevention supplies, storage, and waiting-area furnishings will help turn the structure into a working healthcare facility. These practical essentials make it possible for the team to care for patients safely and consistently.
The clinic will not replace the need for outreach. Instead, it will give MaCHO a stronger home base for services, community connection, and a reliable place where families can seek help closer to home.
